St Vincent’s Day – Blessing the vine

Blessing the vines and the grapes to celebrate St Vincent, patron saint of growers. In days gone by growers would trek out to a vineyard – with sausage, lard and bread packed carefully – to celebrate! On their return they cut the “Vincent cane” which was set in water in the home.

Blessing the vines and the grapes to celebrate St Vincent, patron saint of growers. In days gone by growers would trek out to a vineyard – with sausage, lard and bread packed carefully – to celebrate! On their return they cut the “Vincent cane” which was set in water in the home.

And this tradition has been rejuvenated by Tokaj-Hegyalja, Taktaköz, Hernád-völgye TDM and the Európai Borlovagrend Tokaji Legátusa.

The procession starts from the Szerelmi cellar row at the Benkő Cellar, moving into Vécsey dűlő vineyard for the vine blessing ceremony by representatives of the Evangelical, Reformed and Catholic churches. Soltész Pince is the next station, followed by a brief town tour before the Roman Catholic church for a ecumenical service to bless the wines of Tokaj winemakers. Then out to the main square for mulled wine and sour soup, finishing in Hímesudvar.

As the saying goes, “If the suns shines bright on St Vincent’s Day, the cellar will fill with wine.”

So, let’s hope for some sun!
